Hatchet 3 was the film that was a horror in the Hatchet trilogy. It follows the murderous adventures of Victor Crowley across Louisiana's Honey Island Swamp. The film stars Kane Hodder as Victor Crowley, Brian Quinn as Deputy Winslow as well as Rileah Vanderbilt as Misty.
Its practical special effects are the film's greatest strengths. Hatchet 3 is a horror film that employs CG effects in a lesser degree than other films. Hatchet 3 has a lot of practical makeup effects and sets that result in some really horrific scenes throughout the film.
Kane Hodder is a standout in the ensemble and is a formidable villain. The dialogue is sufficiently campy and witty to feel like a true '80s slasher movie at moments. There are instances of humor throughout the film that add humor to all the bloody action.
However because of the small budget (reportedly just $1 million) most of the locations are re-used (blog post) from previous films in the series--the same boat house was featured twice in the film and a lot of the film feels like it's been recycled from other films in this series. For those who have watched Hatchet or Hatchet 2, this could make the film feel familiar.
Overall, I was impressed by Hatchet 3 even though it was very similar to previous installments in the series. It also provided plenty of gory thrills and entertaining performances from the actors.
